Film Festival Studies College Course

The 501 (c)(3) nonprofit arts organization that produces the Portland Film Festival is sponsoring a college level course available exclusively at Clackamas Community College’s Digital Media Communication’s course on Film Festival Studies. The class will provide students with the skills needed to understand and navigate the independent film distribution system of the modern day film festival. It will focus on film development skills and the processes required in today’s independent film industry. From post-production considerations to film mechanics and design to production considerations, students will utilize development tools to create plans and interactive projects to be implemented and used during the Portland Film Festival.

Andy Mingo, Director of the DMC program noted, “we’re excited to offer students and general public in the Portland metro area a class that gets to the core of today’s independent filmmakers—film festivals are such an integral part of distribution for indie films. As a filmmaker that has screened at festivals around the world, I know how preparation can turn a mediocre opportunity into a successful one. Students should take this course if they are serious about becoming filmmakers or making independent cinema.”

The class will tap local producer and Executive Director of the Portland Film Festival, Josh Leake, an accomplished filmmaker himself, with his recent sale of “Glena,” to Showtime, a documentary about a local woman who fights her way to the top. “Bringing a class to filmmakers on film festivals, is exactly what I wished I had when I started out,” added Leake, “I’m hoping to pass on my own experiences but also draw from some of the nation’s most renowned festivals through in class discussions and talks.”

The class is currently accepting students for its summer term under class number DMC-199-01 (261757). The one credit course will be held Wednesdays 12-1:50pm at the Harmony Campus off of 82nd Ave. by Clackamas Town Center and in the city of Portland from June 18th to September 5th.
