WHY I VOLUNTEER: Meet Robin

Volunteer at the 2017 Portland Film Festival

Meet Robin. She enjoys Monte Cristo’s, in intimate theaters (like Laurelhurst), while watching strong female leads in Hidden Figures and Wonder Woman! She’s one of the many volunteers that help produce the Portland Film Festival. This year with the support of Comcast, we are highlighting volunteer stories leading up to the 2017 edition from October 30th to November 5th.

If you’d like to volunteer, email or meet us in person at one of our upcoming events. Find out more at our Facebook page.

What’s your first name and where are you from?
Robin & I’m from Portland, OR
How did you hear about the festival?
My sister wanted to volunteer for an organisation and came across the Portland Film Festival.  We wanted to meet people and enhance our community.  We started 3 years ago and we’ve been with them ever since.
Why do you volunteer?
I love movies, meeting interesting people, gaining new friends & having fun. Being able to give filmmakers a place for their films to be seen is wonderful. I’ve also learned a lot about the industry while volunteering.
If you volunteered with the festival in the past, what was your favorite experience?
Last year we screened a movie called the “Good Mind” about the Onondaga Nation.  My family had recently taken a trip to Syracuse, NY to watch the World Indoor Lacrosse Championship which were hosted by the Onondaga Nation. We had driven through many of the areas depicted in the film and had met several individuals who had been in the documentary. To top off the experience we were able to meet the filmmaker Gwendolyn Cates at the screening.  .
What are you looking forward to at this year’s festival?
To meet more filmmakers and see some incredible films—one I screened last year “The Watcher” can now be seen on The Lifetime Network.
Are you a filmmaker? If so, what are you working on now?
I am not a filmmaker but I do take a lot of photos.
What’s your favorite movie and why?
Oh there are so many, I think it depends on my mood. Lately I really liked Hidden Figures & Wonder Woman.
What’s your least favorite movie and why?

Hmm hard to think because if I don’t like them I’ll don’t remember them.

What’s your guilty pleasure or your comfort movie?
Ok don’t judge but I love “Rudy” & “Invincible” I’m a football fanatic, good or bad I watch them.
Where do you read or find out about movies?

I find them during previews, tv or online.

Where do you like to watch movies?
Love to watch comfortably from my sofa.
What’s your favorite theater in Portland?
There are a lot of theatres in Portland, I like the intimate setting like the Laurelhurst but I also like the recliners at Century 16.
If you could cast your dream movie, what genre, cast and who would direct?
Love a Crime Drama with Jeremy Renner, Noomi Rapace with Christopher Nolan directing.
If you could bring three things to a deserted island what would you bring?
Military knife with multi use & flint, rope & magic beans (may need something and who couldn’t use magic)
What kind of sandwich would you be?
Monte Cristo, deliciousness in a sandwich.
