Welcome to Portland Film Festival.

We dedicate Portland Film Festival to support independent voices. We hope you will join us in this action to amplify unrepresented artists challenging the beliefs of what’s possible and the future of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.

Rising Voices of Independent Film

Led by our Director of Programming Joe Stevens, we are excited to introduce over 250 directors to know right now and to watch in the future. Our inaugural list will highlight rising voices making independent movies today.

Thank you to the artists

To artists everywhere, we encourage you to continue the struggle and bring your work to fruition. Your job is essential. Hospitals keep us alive, but your art keeps us inspired. Without your inspiration, this world would be just endless phone trees and Zoom meetings.

We send our love and admiration to all the filmmakers that submitted projects for consideration. We support you in your efforts and offer you a pass to experience this year’s festival and invite you to submit your film to one of our Behind the Scenes discussions about your movie, including its creation, development, tips, and suggestions for future filmmakers.

It was challenging, a hard decision, and we found so much raw talent and quality in all of our submissions that the programming team pushed back our final choices as far as possible.

The loudest voices are not always the best voices

Our festival will present works of art submitted from 107 countries in the world.

Movies inform more than just our sense of style, but our life choices and the stories we tell each other. We encourage you to explore the selection of films and use some of the stories as starting points in discussions with neighbors, friends, and others.

Program and schedule

We will be posting films and focused programming tracks over the next six weeks. So we encourage you to come back to Portlandfilm.org to read more about what’s happening in independent cinema today, but also to walk in someone else’s shoes. Because watching an independent film is also supporting independent voices.

Comcast customers say “Portland Film Festival” in your voice remote starting October 6th, 2021

Thanks to our technology partner Comcast for making accessibility so easy with their voice-over technology that makes a selection of our films available for all Comcast subscribers across the United States for free. In addition, we will broadcast a select number of workshops, discussions, and meet-the-director shows to introduce you to the people and stories behind the movies at this year’s Festival.

Behind the Scenes

We decided to forgo in-person events to support the health of our community and return the focus to the artists and filmmakers. A huge thank you to the programming and submissions team behind this year’s festival, including Katie, Dayan, Ben, Jen, and Joe. Thank you for the countless hours dedicated by pre-screeners and film watchers.

Thanks to the rest of the team behind the Festival and the volunteers new and recently signing up! Thank you to our presenting sponsor Comcast. You’re committed to supporting underrepresented voices and that is inspiring. Thank you to all of our sponsors including Koerner Camera Systems, Oregon Film, City of Portland Film Office, Portland Mortgage, Ryan Artists, SAG Aftra, Iatse, Purry Consultants, Portland Business Journal, Pamplin Media Group, NW Examiner, and countless others that help make our Festival possible. We could not produce this Festival without you.

Watch a movie. Support independent voices!

Sincerely,

Portland Film Festival
